After working at Praline design studio for the most of 2010 it was time for a change, just before leaving I produced
a mini annual report for Peckham Space (above). I am now working for Mind Design with Holger and Claire for the foreseeable future.

Finally, I found the time to visit Wim Crouwel's exhibition at the Design museum. Great archive of work, definitely worth a visit! It's been a busy few weeks, there are on going projects and new ones starting like the site of illustrator Yann Brien. Also the identity and website for Dominic Winter Book Auctions continues, this project is being completed in partnership with Myles Lucas. Images to come soon.

A new commission for Praline from Peckham Space. Slipstream is a Spring time exhibition/installation at Peckham Space by David Cotterrell, the show maps social, geographical and personal histories of North Peckham using some pretty impressive equipment.

Thursday evening saw the launch of 'Peckham Heroes' at Peckham Space, the night consisted of children singing songs, karaoke and audience participation. It was a fun evening with plenty of laughs. Nice to see the vinyl artwork and light-box in situ also.

Peckham Space

Today I visited Peckham Space where I photographed the poster I had recently completed for their lightbox (whilst working at Praline). The poster was to invite potential exhibitors for an upcoming show in December.

Update

In November I'll be starting work with London Design studio Praline, they've got some great work so I'm really excited to start with them soon. In the mean time I will continue working at Wire Design in Spitalfields alongside some freelance branding projects which I will be uploading before Christmas with any luck.

I have now finished at Mind Design for the time being with a view to return in a month or so hopefully, it was a really useful few weeks working alongside some great designers, I've worked on identity & web projects for some interesting clients of which I will be updating my site with soon. NB: Studio, Accept & Proceed + Mind Design.

Another busy few weeks have past, included in these weeks has been a great little meeting with Mind Design Studio, where I had the pleasure of meeting all the guys and seeing their lovely studio. As well as this, I visited Accept & Proceed who aren't far from Arnold Circus. I will be staying in touch with both studio's in the future. Also after couple of weeks at Red Stone and a change of plans I will now be working with NB: Studio for the coming three weeks from Monday, very exciting.

Arnold Circus

As I said in the post before, "I have been hugely busy" with 1. TheTypography Summer School, which was brilliant so thanks very much to Fraser for running that for the last couple of weeks, below you can see a school photo of all of us, Im at the back on the right. 2. The next exciting thing is my new home, Arnold Circus, London. Its full of community spirit and delivered a great welcome party for us. (or for the opening of the bandstand?). 3. I will be starting work at Red-Stone for the next two weeks, they are based in Clerkenwell which is just down the road. 4. After Red Stone I'll be back to YCN for the next month helping out with some big on-going projects they are currently working on. More news to come.

Full On…

Over the last month I have been hugely busy what with moving to London, attending ISTD award ceremonies, D&AD exhibitions, working at YCN, and participating in Fraser Muggeridge's Typography Summer School... This also explains the lack of updates, I will post images and more news as soon as I sort out the internet in my new place in Arnold Circus, London.

Signage & Business

This week has been another full one, I have been putting up the signage around the campus with the rest of the team as well as getting some business cards ready. I have chopped up lots of old work and paper samples into business card size which have then been stamped with my details. Waste not, want not.

Publicity Workshops

On the back of The Art Club, myself and David have been invited back for three weeks to help publicise a theatre production that the school have been working on. So with help from the students that attend our workshops, we will be designing the invites and programs for the event. So far its been a really fun project with lots of nice artwork coming from the students.

Publication Launch

Last week was Bristol UWE Graphics annual publication launch, the publication was exhibited at The Arnolfini, Bristol alongside a talk from the award winning designer Henrik Kubel. Myself and Liam Randall were the financial directors for the publication so it was nice to see where the money had been flowing to. After the Arnolfini publication launch there was a great after party for all of UWE graphics, above is an image of 'Class 2010' with me at the front, kneeling down on the left. Its been a great year for everyone I think, and the launch became a good excuse to let your hair down for a second!

Degree Show Branding

Myself and the team working on the degree show branding presented our concept and final designs to a board of UWE officials just the other day. This was the final stage of the project in reference to any changes so its full steam ahead all the way to the deadline now.

Lots Of News

Thanks very much to everyone at thomas.matthews for giving me the opportunity to complete a work placement with you. My time at thomas.matthews was full of exciting projects and hectic days which made for a great experience, topped of with a couple off beers at the end.

On other news, I have been awarded membership to the International Society of Typographic Designers on the back of a recent submission. This is great news and funnily enough means I could have MISTD after my name if I wanted to.

After a productive (thomas.matthews) easter holiday I am back to work in Bristol, tying up loose ends, completing projects one of which is The Art Club, in collaboration with David Gibson (Image of plan above) which will end up being a fairly comprehensive document that records our process as well as containing issues around the subject of creativity in schools.

Easter Break

I thought I'd post an arbitrary image of my desk for your viewing pleasure seeing as there is not a lot else to post at moment.

There is plenty of work in progress going on though, I am compiling an archival self promotional package with some special print finishes including die cutting and foils, as well as continuing work with Redland Green School which myself and Jason Lewer will be completing with guidance from City ID.

The Art Club Exhibition —

Today is the finale for The Art Club, we will be hosting an exhibition at Lockleaze School to display all the work produced from the workshops, we'll have music (playlist above), squash, fruit and slideshows!

Its a really fun way of introducing the students to the world of 'Art' and exposing them to new and different ways of working which will hopefully result in raised expectations for themselves.

Eyam, Derbyshire

Images within images, I recently visited Eyam, Derbyshire, The project is created from an unexpected result, the result being the photos held within the images, they came from an undeveloped 35mm film found in an old SLR camera in a charity shop.

Finale —

Today was the final workshop with the students of Redland Green School, it went really well, we included a blind folded problem solving task and a chocolate reward.

Thanks very much to everyone that came to the workshop, the deadline for the project is in a couple of months so the hard work on the signage and way-finding system now begins.

On the subject of signage, me and a smallish team of designers have won the pitch to create the branding and signage for the upcoming uwe degree show, I'll be working under the name of Team Blank, the name suggests the angle we will be approaching the project from.

Hello again —

This week is proving to be just as crazy as the last and it's only Tuesday, I realise that I haven't made any recent posts so I thought i'd do a proper one now.

Today I looked after the AV studio exhibition with David Gibson which had its Private view on the Friday just gone, it will be open until thursday this week between 10-5 if you want to come by.

We had a nice amount of people through the door today and also got the chance to work on some projects with looming deadlines.

Above are images of the exhibition open day as well as a photo of my contribution to the show, my object was a cassette walkman by Ferguson electronics, the typeface I designed was an interpretation from a logo type found on my object.

Today, David Gibson and myself created some signs for the continuing workshops with Lockleaze primary school, the logo was created yesterday and will act as branding for the project, fluro orange has also become the colour of choice for the identity of the project.

AV Studio Poster —

Above is the poster designed across the group, the yellow side was designed by the students at Bath university, with the red side by us Bristol lot, everyone had to design an 'A' so the above is my 'A' and one of the Bath students 'A's, so that the poster can be interchangeable as well as read and understood from either composition.

AV studio —

Over the past week or so myself and 6 other UWE graphics students have been working in collaboration with some final year graphics students from Bath University, together we will be holding an exhibition at an old AV shop, the brief is to choose an object typically found in an AV shop and create art work or a project based around that object.

Yesterday we met with the guys in Bath to look at the space we'd be using for the exhibition and also to get our hands on the posters that were also collaboratively designed.

Workshop

Today myself and Jason hosted number one workshop of 4 at Redland Green School, the workshops objective is to inform our design for the signage and wayfinding systems, the student are the best source of knowledge about the building and how it is best used.

The students completed tasks over the hour and a half workshop, and produced some creative work that will be valuable for future direction of the project.

Clevedon, Poets Walk

Following the trend of place names in contrast to the actual place I visited Poet's Walk, Clevedon this weekend, Clevedon is the nearest seaside town to bristol and is a great place to spend a day, the Poet's Walk wasn't exactly what I expected but it was interesting and provided some pretty amazing views of the Seven Bridge as well as surrounding mud flats and cliffs.

Funny little illusion through the door this morning, and I use the word 'Illusion' very lightly, this was probably received by 100's of 1000's, but I find the attempt to make the flyer look like a burst open envelope quite funny, the leaflet actually opens at the side like a book.

I discovered a camera film from 1991 today, I decided to get the film developed and document the anticipation and expectation behind the process—the pictures came out fantastically, the 36 photos I got developed showed a village festival in full swing… as part of the project I plan to visit the place in the pictures.
